Choosing the Right Massage College

If you’re thinking about training in massage, first of all, brilliant choice! It’s a hands-on, people-focused career that can be genuinely life-changing (for you and your future clients). But not all massage courses are created equal. So how do you know which massage course/massage college is right for you?

Here’s what to look out for before you commit.

1. Clear accreditation and recognised qualifications at our massage college

This is a big one. Make sure the course leads to a qualification that’s recognised by professional bodies and insurers. Without proper accreditation, you may struggle to get insured or join a professional association – and that can limit where and how you work.  Our ITEC/VTCT Level 3 qualifications are Ofqual-regulated.  This is the industry-recognised standard.

Check:

  • Who accredits the course?

  • Is the qualification regulated?

  • Will it allow you to gain professional insurance?

If the provider is vague about any of this, that’s a red flag.

2. Strong anatomy and physiology training at our massage college

Massage isn’t just about technique – it’s about understanding the body. A solid course will include in-depth anatomy and physiology, not just surface-level basics. You should leave knowing muscles, joints, common pathologies, and how different systems of the body interact.

The more confident you are in your understanding of the body, the safer and more effective you’ll be as a therapist.

Our ITEC Diploma in Massage includes an ITEC Level 3 qualification in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology.

3. Plenty of hands-on practice at our massage college

Massage is a practical skill. Reading about it is one thing; doing it repeatedly, with guidance, is another.

Look for:

  • Supervised practical sessions

  • Real client case studies

  • Small group sizes

  • Detailed feedback from tutors

If most of the course is online theory with very little in-person practice, you may not feel confident when you qualify.

Our classroom-based tuition is 95% hands-on learning and practise.  Our class sizes are a maximum of 16, with 2 tutors for class sizes over 14 students, to allow are great ratio of tutor to student focus.

4. Experienced, supportive tutors at the massage college

Your tutors matter more than you might think. Ideally, they should be practising therapists with real-world experience, not just teachers who’ve stepped away from the industry years ago.

Ask:

  • How long have they been practising?

  • Do they still work with clients?

  • Are they approachable and supportive?

Learning massage can feel vulnerable at times – you’re working closely with others, building confidence in your touch, and learning to communicate professionally. You want tutors who create a safe, encouraging learning environment.

All of our tutors are current practitioners in their chosen field.  Our tutors are hand-picked for their experience, excellent techniques, and skills.

5. Clear progression routes

Think about your long-term goals. Do you want to work in a spa? Set up your own practice? Train in sports massage? Specialise in clinical or remedial work? A good training provider should offer progression pathways or at least clear advice about what comes next.

6. Real preparation for working life

Being a great therapist isn’t only about technique. You’ll also need to understand:

  • Client consultations and record keeping

  • Contraindications and red flags

  • Professional boundaries

  • Hygiene and health & safety

  • Basic business skills (if you plan to be self-employed)

A strong course will prepare you for the realities of working with the public, not just the classroom environment.

7. Reviews and student feedback

Have a look at testimonials, independent reviews, or social media comments. Are former students now working as therapists? Do they speak positively about their experience?

While no course will suit absolutely everyone, consistent themes of support, professionalism and thorough training are good signs.

Our massage college has only 5* Google reviews.

8. The overall feel of the massage college

This might sound intangible, but it matters. When you speak to the course provider, do you feel welcomed and informed? Are your questions answered clearly? Do you feel pressured into enrolling or supported in making the right decision?

Trust your instincts. You’re investing time, money and energy – you deserve a course that feels right.

Choosing a massage course isn’t just about getting a certificate. It’s about building confidence, competence and a foundation for your future career. Take your time, ask questions, and make sure the course you choose sets you up not just to pass – but to thrive.
